Yoshiyuki Okamura (岡村 善行 Okamura Yoshiyuki), also known under the pen names Buronson and Sho Fumimura, is the author of Fist of the North Star alongside illustator Tetsuo Hara.
Buronson made his manga debut in 1971 and found success in 1975 with the detective series Doberman Deka with illustrator Shinji Hiramatsu. He has also worked with Kentaro Miura of Berserk and Ryoichi Ikegami to create several other successful manga including Japan and Heat.
Biography[edit]
Yoshiyuki Okamura was born on June 16, 1947 in Saku, Nagano, Japan.
After leaving high school, he joined the Japan Air Self-Defense Force because his family was poor where he served as an Air Force radar mechanic until he graduated from there in 1967. In 1971 he made his manga debut as the assistant of Hiroshi Motomiya where he was credited under the pen name Buronson. Eventually he found his first success with the Weekly Shonen Jump serialization of his series Doberman Deka with Shinji Hiramatsu, which got adapted into into two live-action films and a TV show. Buronson continued to work on several miscellaneous manga with different illustrators for different magazines for a while.
In 1983, Buronson found massive success alongside Tetsuo Hara with their series Fist of the North Star, which ran until 1983 and spawned a massive franchise and went on to become one of the best-selling manga of all time. From 2001 to 2010 Hara continued to work on Fist of the North Star in the form of a prequel called Fist of the Blue Sky that Buronson supervised and gave support on.
In 2017, he established a scholarship program in his hometown and the next year he founded a manga school called Buronson 100-Hour Manga Academy at the Sakudaira Community Center in Saku. Tuition is free and the students attend 20 lectures from professional writers, artists and editors throughout the year for a total of 100 hours.
